Halfvasten Maaseik

International Maaseiker Mid-Lent Parade is the oldest carnival in Belgium and was founded in 1865. The parade attracts the streets of the historic center of Maaseik, the course is about 2.5 km long. Unlike many parades in both Limburg, which take place during the Carnival period, this parade attracts with half fasting and therefore the closing of the carnival season.

Carnval project

The overall goal of the project EPHEMERAL HERITAGE OF THE EUROPEAN CARNIVAL RITUALS (CARNVAL) – Agreement n. 2014-3297/001-001; this project has been funded with support from the European Commission – is to promote some of the most European Carnival rituals and the cultural and creative sectors associated with them. These events are an important part of Europe’s intangible cultural heritage. Our project, therefore, aims to bring greater attention to these events and create links among them – and ultimately to reinforce the idea of a common European cultural area and enhance the feeling of a common European identity.

Carnval Network

One of the most important activities of the CARNVAL Project has been the creation of an European network of public and private institutions related to European carnival festivities. It has been been created under the auspices of the EC – Creative Europe – Culture Sub-programme, and aspires to promote activities of interest to all of its members. As such, it aims to act as a liaison between carnival festive events and performers, audiences, suppliers, traders, tourism agencies and the media in order to promote multi-disciplinary and transnational activities, including (but not limited to):
